It's time for a big bash at the ranch. If you're reading this, you're invited. It's going to be a combo birthday party for Zach, Mariah, and myself. January 15th, my place, probably around 8-ish. I'll give more details later when I know more. Feel free to invite a few party safe people.

    For you, gramps
Oh danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen and down the mountain side
The summer’s gone, and all the roses falling
It’s you, it’s you must go and I must bide

But come ye back when summer’s in the meadow
Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow
It’s I’ll be here in sunshine, or in shadow
Oh danny boy, oh danny boy, I love you so

But when ye come and all the flowers are dying
If I am dead, and dead I well may be
You’ll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an ave there for me

And I shall hear tho’ soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be
For you will bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me

    Rock climbing bonanza!
So I went to Smith Rock the weekend before last. It was the first time I've gone climbing outside. It was part of the Rock III class at the UO, and we climbed on anchors that we built! They taught us how to place protection safely so that our anchors would be bombproof (or bomber, as the lingo goes). It was a three day camping trip and there were about 15 or so of us that made a tent city at the nearby grasslands. Even though you had to be hyper-focused the whole time or risk making a bad anchor and kill yourself, I can't remember a more relaxing weekend. I came back totally rested and recharged.

    Picture time!

Word to the wise -- nylon webbing cuts through rope *real fast*. This poor rope was sawn in half in about a minute. An effective and unforgettable example of why you need to clip webbing and rope together with a carabiner and never connect them to each other: http://opp.uoregon.edu/climbing/rock3pics_f04/IMG_3505.jpg

Found these laying around my hard drive. Sara, you especially should appreciate #2.

    1) "Men are admitted into Heaven not because they have curbed & govern'd their Passions or have No Passions, but because they have Cultivated their Understandings"

A Vision of the Last Judgement
    William Blake

    2) I found this in a post on slashdot a long time ago. Love the names of the pieces. =)

"A guy named Peter Schickele (Have no idea of the real spelling. Ok, lemme go google... Wow - I got it right.) a music professor and composer has been 'deriving' compositions, 11 albums' worth, of the mythical son of JS Bach, PDQ Bach.
Funny stuff, yet very scholarly, in a weird way.

Anyway, he has a website at pdqbach.com.

His peices always have great names too, like Music for an Awful Lot of Winds and Percussion and The Short-Tempered Clavier and Other Dysfunctional Works for Keyboard. Worth a listen."

    The pre meet
I went to the prefontaine classic with my daddy-o today. It was pretty cool, but honestly I think I enjoyed watching the kiddies compete at the high school district and state track meets more. I'm not sure exactly why....it's like the high school meets were more "pure" track and field or something. It probably has a lot to do with wondering how many of the world-class athletes I was watching today have used performance enhancing drugs to get to where they are. I bet the answer is "more than you think", and that's aggravating.

That, and there was no triple jump this year. Bastards.

Oh well, it was still amazing.

    Neato quotes
It's been a while since I've posted, or even checked my friends' journals, but I figure it's time to share some cool quotes I've run across in books I read recently.

    ------Kurt Vonnegut - Mother Night------
"There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too. Where's evil? It's that large part of every man that wants to hate without limit, that wants to hate with God on its side. It's that part of every man that finds all kinds of ugliness so attractive. It's that part of an imbecile that punishes and vilifies and makes war gladly."

------Robert Heinlein - The Puppet Masters------
    1) "I don't believe in luck, Sam. Luck is a tag given by the mediocre to account for the accomplishments of genius." [My take - I'm not sure I agree with that as a general rule, but it's definitely amusing. And there's certainly something to be said for putting yourself in a position to be able to benefit from fortunate circumstances...]

    2) After a character's brain-slug-ridden father tries to extoll the virtues of having a brain slug controlling you, how wonderful it is, how peaceful, how there will be world peace once the human race is all being controlled, etc, the character thinks to himself that: "...there were probably custard heads just screwy enough to fall for such a line -- surrender their souls willingly for a promise of security and peace." [My translation - If you want certain security and peace, go build yourself an impenetrable bunker and live by yourself. Freedom inherently contains risks.]

------Robert Pirsig - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance------
    1) "It was a puzzling thing. The truth knocks on the door and you say, 'Go away, I'm looking for the truth,' and so it goes away. Puzzling."

    2) "You are never dedicated to something you have complete confidence in. When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths, or any other kind of dogmas or goals, it's always because these dogmas or gols are in doubt."

    =/

After reading your latest post, Richard, I'm rather annoyed. I was going to comment on exactly what I thought about how you were treated, then realized that I might get you in trouble by commenting *in* your journal, hence this post...

I can understand your company/organization (C/O) not wanting people to find your journal while searching for the C/O itself, but I think the better way for them to go about it would have been: "hey, we found this livejournal thing while doing an internet search for our C/O. It's possible that what you've said could reflect badly on the C/O. Do you think you could delete you journal until it clears google cache, and then refrain from using the actual name of our C/O? We'd really appreciate it."

That's a fuckton better than "delete those posts. Now. And we're changing internet use policies because of you. We're watching you....", which is what it sounds like happened, and I think the former method still would have gotten you to change your journal but without any bad feelings.

Reminds me of another C/O which will go unnamed....

I went to the all comers meet today and competed in triple jump for the first time in....6 years?

Not too terribly shabby. My timing is all off, but I still managed to get 43 feet from 3/4 speed jumps and without spikes. My all time PR is 46, so I've got a bit to go, but I could tell there was a lot to improve on today so it's encouraging. I'm glad I went and tried it, and I'm looking forward to the next few meets.

Greg and I are all fired up over a game idea now too. I think this is the one we'll end up attempting first, and I think we have a good chance of being successful with it.

Work is craziness on stilts at the moment. We're getting ready for product release on the 1st, and the fur is flying. It's a good atmosphere though. Everyone's working hard but it's still sane hours (I get to pick them, even now), and there's a cooperative feeling of accomplishment driving us instead of a taskmaster and a whip. Good stuff.

And that about wraps things up for now. Maybe more in-depth stuff after this crunch mode is over.
